Principle-Centered Leaders are regarded as the most effective, succesful leaders. The following is a summary of the characteristics of these leaders from Stephen Covey's book, " Principle-Centered Leadership".
They Are Continually Learning
- Curious
- Ask Questions
- Learn through seeing and listening
They Are Service-Oriented
- Thinking of others before themselves.
They Radiate Positive Energy
- Usually cheerful, pleasant, optimistic, upbeat, hopeful, and enthusiastic.
- Sometimes their aura charges or changes negative energy fields around them, while attract other positive people.
- Stive to be peacemakers and harmonizers.
They Believe in Other People
- They don't overract to criticism, weakness, or bad situations.
- Aware of weaknesses, but refuse to use them against people to form stereotypes, labels, or prejudice.
- They don't carry grudges.
- They don't focus on them trying to change people, but focus on people changing themselves.
They Lead Balanced Lives
- They are have a variety of hobbies and take part in different activities.
- Usually surround themselves with many friends
- They have a healthy sense of humor, laughing at themselves and not at others.
- They don't tend to brag or feel the need to put emphasis on titles or achievements.
- They are not extreamists: not "work-aholics, religious zealots, politcial fantaics, diet crashers, food bingers, pleasure addits..." (pg. 36)
- They don't focus on their mistakes and are willing to admit and forget.
- No need to intimidate or use self-pity.
- Take both praise and blame equally well.
- Happy for others' successes.
They See Life as an Adventure
- Secure with themselves.
- No need to categorize or stereotype people and things.
- They arn't afraid to take risks or make mistakes.
- They work with creativity, willpower, and courage to explore rather than stick to their comfort zones.
- They arn't overawed by celebrities, government figures, etc.
They are Synergistic
- They are change catalysts.
- They are productive.
- They delegate and arn't threatened by others.
- They separate the people from the problem.
- Win/Win is the name of the game, rather than compromising where each party has to give up something.
They Exercise for Self-Renewal
- Physically: work out, build up endurance, healthy bodies create healthy minds
- Emotionally: they listen to others, unconditional love, patience
- Mentally: reading, creative works, problem solving
- Spiritually: prayer, meditation, self reflecting
- They take the time to "sharpen the saw".
